Design for Digital Media Environments – Post 30 – Project Review

In this post I will be reviewing the final product talking about things that I like and dislike about the final product, I will also be talking about the project and the team I had, talking about what worked well and didn’t.

I didn’t have much input on the design of the site as I joined late however I do really like the look of the site. The colours are extremely nice as the dark blue background really adds to the night time theme that the website is based around. Then buttons add a nice contrast to the page as they are bright and colorful really popping out from the background and adds a lively look to the site. Overall the colours work great together and create a nice clean site.

The structure to the to site matches the colours and overall look to the design and its kept clean and simple, it has the standard nav bar and footers with a content section in between, the content is kept tidy by a grid structure, this keeps the page clean adding to the nice look of the site.


From using the site I have found that the site is easy to navigate and find what your looking for, apart from the most important feature to the site which is the posts and post section. This requires you to log in to even see this section, I think this is a big mistake and will have to be fixed in the near future before putting the website live.


The non-user generated content is all relevant to the site as it explains what the site is about and gives a little back story about the team and the journey we have been on to create this is. The content is kept tidy and clean even the user-generated content as it as we have broken down each section and created there own area for them to separate the different elements to the site.

5 Things I Dislike

  • To much info on home page should be on another page
  • No real branding other than the colour scheme (no logo)
  • The register button is at the very button of the page


  • Create a new page for the current homepage content
  • Add a Feed to the homepage
  • Add a post button which redirect to log-in

What went well with-in the team

Whilst working on the project our strongest asset as a team was our communication as we always talked on Facebook or in group meetings keeping each other up to date and current on what were currently working on. This meant that 2 people was never doing the same thing. It also allowed us to regularly check in with peoples process and set tasks to do and create deadlines for them task. This created a really productive team and the project quickly got completed.

What didn’t go so well

The main problem with-in the team other than 2 people never talking to us or doing any work, was the file sharing, this became annoying as we all had different files with different code, this meant everyone was developing for a different code to each other. To fix this I merged everyone’s process together and fixed a lot of errors, once this was done I uploaded it so everyone could work on the same code.

Design for Digital Media Environments – Post 29 – Final Project Testing and User Feedback

The website is fully finished so, now i’m going to do a quick user test by using a friend to complete a few tasks which the website should be able to preform faultlessly with-out any input or help from me.  After completing the task I will ask him to give us feedback, this feedback is so important as it gives us a view on what the users who come into this blind, the feedback will have to be taken on-board and develop the site around this feedback to create a create user friendly site.

Task One – Register, log-in then log-out

‘I found and clicked the “sign up” button along the navigation bar which took me to page where I had to fill in my student details.  It then popped up asking my to log-in, so I entered my details and hit log-in, which redirected me to a new page which allowed me to create a post or read posts that other people have posted. To log-out I just hit the log-out button which signed me out and took me back to the first home page’ – Max Copper

Task Two – Post a Comment

‘The home page doesn’t say how to post a comment however remembering from when I logged in last time it had the feeds and posting system there, so I logged back into my account which took me back to the posting page. Whilst on the page I could see the posting section, so I filled in all of the information and hit submit. Then below I could instantly see my post below with a time stamp’.

User Feedback

‘At first the site was easy to navigate and had lots of information which was easy to find. However when being asked to post a comment I found it extremely hard to do and if I hadn’t been asked to log-in before hand I would have never found it.’ – Max Copper

Wow this feedback shows a massive floor in the website as the main purpose of the site is hidden and hard to navigate to, this will 100% have to be changed however whether I have enough time between now and the project deadline next week is unknown, however will definitely be doing before putting the website up commercially.



Design for Digital Media Environments – Post 28 – Net Neutrality

At the moment the term ‘Net Neutrality’ is all over the news but what is Net Neutrality?

“Net Neutrality is the Internet’s guiding principle: It preserves our right to communicate freely online. This is the definition of an open Internet.” (

So why is net neutrality so important?

“Net Neutrality is crucial for small business owners, startups and entrepreneurs, who rely on the open Internet to launch their businesses, create a market, advertise their products and services, and distribute products to customers. We need the open Internet to foster job growth, competition and innovation.

Net Neutrality lowers the barriers of entry for entrepreneurs, startups and small businesses by ensuring the Web is a fair and level playing field. It’s because of Net Neutrality that small businesses and entrepreneurs have been able to thrive on the Internet. They use the Internet to reach new customers and showcase their goods, applications and services.

No company should be able to interfere with this open marketplace. ISPs are by definition the gatekeepers to the Internet, and without Net Neutrality, they would seize every possible opportunity to profit from that gatekeeper control.

Without Net Neutrality, the next Google would never get off the ground.” (

Hows does it effect the media industry?

The media massively needs the internet to be far and open to anyone and everyone as it inspires and encourages people to create the own pieces of media whether its a blog like Huntington post or independent film products such as pulp fiction. A lot of the creative and new innovations comes from the online community.

So what is the internet and how did it start?

1965- The first ever connection between two computers happened using packet switching.

1969- The first attempt to send a message between two computers failed as the system crashed halfway throw changing the message from ‘login’ to ‘lo’.

1972-  BBN introduced network emailing.

1973- Global networking happens as London and Norway connect to ARPANET, the term internet was created.

1974- Telenet was created as the first ever commercial  internet service provider.

1979- Usenet forms to host news and discussion groups.

1983- Domain Name System was developed

1987- Cisco ships the first routers

1990- Tim Berners-Lee develops HyperText Markup Language (HTML).

1991- Cern introduces World-Wide-Web to the public

1994- Netscape internet browser was launched follow by Microsoft version for windows 95.

1998- Google was born

Design for Digital Media Environments – Post 26 – Production Post 11 – Asset Management p2

To push to the group GitHub to sync my files was difficult at first as I was new to GitHub however there was lots of help online explaining how to use command line to push the files to the server. However this confused me a lot so I just downloaded the GitHub dashboard where once set-up I can just press push and it would upload my files to the respiratory online. The great thing about GitHub is that I will mark all the changes that have been made allowing you to back track if something goes wrong. To update the files I just have to hit the sync button to download all of the new files.

I wasn’t sure how to do this but lucky I came across some code online which converts the timestamp into numerical format and looks at the time and works out how longs its been since it was created, this worked perfectly once added to my code. The link to the website is –

The final stage was to test the to see if it would fetch information, so all I did was add information to the DB via PHPMyAdmin and then refresh the page to see if the information was there.

Success it was! Now that it was working it was time to try and work out how to create a timestamp which tells the user how long since the post was posted.

To pull data from the DB I used an OOP by mistake which was only pointed out to me after I had created the code, however I don’t know how to do it differently so I’m going to leave it how it is however for future websites I will need to learn how to do it differently.


However the way that I coded it went like this;

  1. Create a query to the create table fetching the information that I want.

  1. Then create a while loop which fetch’s the data asked for

Now that I have the information being fetched from the DB I can freely format and adjust the divs to however I want them. For the feed I just created a simple white background with a boarder at the bottom to break the posts up.
